In some parts of the west of France the New Year was called la Guillaneu, or l'Aguillaneuf. My old Maman remembered hard-up people, kids especially, going from door to door singing Guillaneu songs, asking for food or money (Angoumois region, Charente département.)

I'm from a French town in IL and we have a different spelling La Guiannee
