A Case for Overturning the Patriot Act

I MISSPOKE: The Patriot Act was actually passed the very NEXT day in the Senate :)

I realize this is very long, but please, if you're going to debate, watch the whole thing. ^_^ This is a slightly changed version of a speech I gave in my Constitutional Law class this semester.

Also, yes, I apologize for the sound issues! ^^ I'm still fighting with my webcam/computer... Turn the sound up :)

No, the Fourth Amendment states,

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, ****and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized." ***

The "roving wiretaps" completely violate that clause. You really can't excuse that

I'm very sorry for your loss, but all those lives would be lost for nothing if we use that to take away the liberty the terrorists supposedly attacked us for. The idea that if you've done nothing wrong you shouldn't fear unjust laws is based on the notion that our "wrong" will always line up with the ruling class' version of wrong. Also, show me one example of how the Patriot Act has done ANYTHING to stop terror.

I am with you 100 percent on this one Rebekah. Now, let's update three years. The Patriot act is still on the books, and is being extended again with NO reforms. Please, if you can, join the protest against the Patriot Act:

12 NOON, March 12, 2011, come to the West side of the U.S. Capitol Building (the side facing the Washington Monument) to join a protest with one single, clear message to Congress: REPEAL THE PATRIOT ACT!
