In our country it was dedided in 1917 that public and private (i.e. Christian) schools get the same government funding (it was a trade off between liberals who wanted universal suffrage and conservatives who wnated public funding for christian schools). We still have that same system.
I may like your country's solution better: Make education neutral and consider religion something that belongs to private life after school.
