Very nicely done video...844 speaks for herself.

THAT SOUNDS GOOD!

The experienced ear can tell that this road engine, the infamous 844, was built as a sprinter, not a mountain mauler. Nevertheless however, the slow turning of her massive 80 inch drive wheels coupled to an endless string of varnish, facilitate in creating stack talk reminiscent of days gone by. Awesome video.

Terrific! I LOVE the sound that thing makes when she's working. Awesome catch!

the earth shaking of the steam engine along the growl of an EMD...............amazing

Great video!
UP 844 burns heavy oil for fuel. Oil fires often flicker like this, depending upon hard the engine is working, the draft through the firebox, etc. It is especially apparent at night.

Glad you enjoyed it. It was neat being there. The Blue mountains is a wonderful place to see trains; especially steam. I had the impression that they pretty much set 844's throttle where they wanted it and then just left it alone. This makes it easier to fire and is better for the engine. Then they used the diesel as needed to maintain the speed that they wanted to run at. Easier to move the throttle on the diesel.
