Also, the monkeys are picking through the snow for barley grain which the park folks toss out for them. They are still wild and have free roam of the mountains and sometimes may not even be at the onsen when you get there. When we went in June 2009 they didn't show up till 30 minutes after we got there.

The park puts out food for them, but keeps it natural and scarce so they remain wild.
