This is a short test video of okreylos' "Kinect 3D Video Capture Project". As the name implies, the software can create a 3D reconstruction of a particular "point of view" using a Kinect.
It can do a much better job than that but I'm terrible at calibrating that thing, so it's the best I can get for now.

I'm really bad at explaining this, so if you stumbled on this video by accident and have no idea what it is about, go take a look at this video which explains how to get and use the software: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TGF30-5KuQ

The Dededoll appears courtesy of Brawl in the Family. He was very nice and didn't complain at all about sitting on some pillows for five minutes. Get your own at http://www.brawlinthefamily.com/?page_id=1239 !

  • Looks nice. One suggestion: to more easily rotate around a particular 3D point, like the doll, first "dolly" until the crosshairs touch that point using left mouse button + z + left shift simultaneously, then moving the mouse up or down. Zoom out first (using scroll wheel) to make it easier. It's a Vrui thing.

What exact hardware are you using? I'm curious to get an idea how fast the software runs on different machines. Also: native Linux or virtual machine? Open-source 3D drivers or native?

  • @okreylos When I recorded the video, I didn't quite understand how to navigate, which is why I kept spinning around the doll in a strange way. I got it now, though!

The software is pretty fast most of the time, though if I press the Z key and move the mouse, there is a slight delay before the camera actually starts moving. I'm using a native Linux on a laptop with a Core 2 Duo and a ATI Mobility Radeon 3400, with native drivers (the open-source ones are unfortunately too slow for me).
