The waters around Nuakata Island, Papua New Guinea are one of the biodiversity hotspots of the Coral Triangle.
The inhabitants of Nuakata and neighboring islands Laban and Pahilele have created an enormous Marine Protected Area along their coast, which they manage and monitor themselves, with the help of Conservation International.
As part of USAID's support to the Papua New Guinea and the Coral Triangle Initiative, these communities have created their own fantastic conservation techniques.
They see this as the best way to guarantee plenty of fish for their future.
Here's a story about a group of local men who tour the waters off Nuakata day-to-day...they have great plans for managing their precious coastline well into the future!
