Peter Rose joined a panel moderated by Risto Puhakka of VLSI Research to discuss the development of ion implantation. The panel was part of a conference organized by SEMI and the Chemical Heritage Foundation called Empowering the Silicon Revolution: the Past, Present and Future of the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Industry, held April 1-2, 2008 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California.
Turns out, madamrotten...we are way superior to that "shipping company" and we continue to rule the implant world!

You're a huge shipping company with a virtual monopoly on package delivery.
But uh-oh... here comes a competitor. They have planes that go really fast. They're reliable, they are stealing your customers, and they are ruining your business. So what do you do?

Amazing! IIS, i.e., Ion Implant Services, my original employer (1981!) was the pioneer of implant as a service--I hear they are still around!

Also a career Ion Implant technician and later field service engineer with Eaton Corp. I deeply enjoyed both the equip. and process. My favorite job was in a GaAs fab because the process is 10X more demanding than Si. We routinely achieved 8-range vacuum throughout our systems. The product would not yield w/o this level of cleanliness. Dr. Rose asked me to stay after giving notice at Eaton & I wish now I had but, I've started a bus. rebuilding X-ray & electron microscopes. Joe Sitter.

As a career ion implant technician, having worked with Extrion and Varian, and especially on NOVA and Eaton equipment, I can very much appreciate this man's words. He's a legend in the field. What he says about the differences between PhDs and technicians on the equipment is absolutely factual. If you want the tool broken, bring in a high level engineer and have him try to set up and a process on his own.
