After centuries of the British politically and militarily lording it over the native Irish under the name of "Britain" and their newly created "British" identity, using the term the "British Isles" is nothing if not a political term. The way some people go on you'd swear the British in question were some harmless apolitical Celtic tribe in Wales, rather than members of the *British* colonial régime which robbed Ireland and subjugated the Irish for centuries.

@LiamNuinseann The term British Isles is a geographic, not political in the same way as Scandanavia. Being part of Britain is nothing to do with the name e.g The Faeroe Islands is partially part of the British isles but has never been part of Great Britain. Indeed the reason Great Britain is so called is because is it the largest of the British Isles. However there does seem to be a large number of ill educated people who think it is some sort of jingoistic political term
