FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN (1732-1809)

Concerto for two lire organizzates, two violins, two violas, cello, doublebass, and two horns in C major Hob VIIh :1

3. Finale: allegro con brio

Performed by Ensemble Baroque de Limoges et Quator Masaiques
Featuring Matthias Loibner and Thierry Nouat, lire organizzate

* A lire organizzate can be most easily described as a combination of the hurdy-gurdy and the chamber organ. It was the favorite instrument of Ferdinand IV, King of Naples whom this concerto was written for.

  • Wouldn't it be great if we could see a video of Matthias Loibner and Thierry Nouat playing their two lire organizzate together in rehearsal?!

  • It would! Wish I had a video of that...

  • I love this, thanks for sharing!

  • According to master luthier Wolfgang Weichselbaumer, he is willing to offer a workshop on the construction of the lira organizzata if enough people are interested. (Perhaps at next year's International Hurdy-Gurdy Symposium in Vienna?) Now, if MM. Loibner and Nouat were in attendance (most likely) this would be a great occasion to make that video!

  • What a wonderful team of musicians. The whole ensemble (and especially Matthias Loibner) should be declared a national treasure for the State of Austria!
