A small crystal with a mass less than 0.1g detonated on a can of coke to show the massive pressure created by detonation.
The crystal was lit by a small blowtorch and only needed the presence of flame to allow it to detonate.
I am not going to disclose how the substance was crystallized as it is unnecessarily easy to be detonated by heat and shock.

  • You can see the crystal go DDT, it's first deflagrating and then detonating. =)

I thought this stuff would be more powerful. I made a 0,1g unconfined flash powder test and it blew a much larger hole in the aluminium can.

  • @Dornier335A The mass was less than 0.1g as that is the limit to my scales accuracy and it did not register on the scales. The mass of the crystal was probably in the range of one tenth to one twentieth of that.

  • @rmoss15

    OK, I understand =)

Was it filmed at 1000 or 1200 fps?

  • @Dornier335A 1000 fps

  • Wow that's incredible! That stuff would be fun to make for little tini firecrackers :P do you have the video that's unedited? so we can hear it.

  • @alabaska182 Yeah, it is great to use for tiny firecrackers though they do cause yours ears to ring for a long time if you dont cover them of have earmuffs on. I dont have a video of this one with sound but I will upload one later of a different example.

  • How come it detonated?

I thought AP only burns with a flash when unconfined and under a certain amount of gram

  • @eveningniteshade

TATP detonates when confined, by shock wave or heat, but it deflagerates by flame. The substance is strong and easy to make, but it is also sensitive at the same time, so when handling the amounts of TATP anything can go wrong if you had an accident with it.

  • @alabaska182 Haha, nice idea. :) Usually Acetone peroxide is used in blasting caps though.

  • How on earth did you get 30% Hydrogen peroxide in Australia for synthesis? Nice vid by the way :)

  • @eveningniteshade I used the Casio Exilim FC-100 set to 1000 fps
