On this clip we have the ninja executing a few high roundhouse kicks while Trainer Mike holds the paddle. In a practical setting, the chances of landing a solid roundhouse to the face of your opponent is pretty slim unless you're really fast and your opponent's guard is down. BUT if you do manage to land it, you'll put in some considerable damage. The key in performing this move is to be nice and loose first of all. The second most important thing is to pivot well on the ball and heel of the foot that stays on the ground. Initiate movement by twisting the torso, dropping your shoulder on the side thats not kickcing, while thrusting the hip toward your target and following through with a nice clean snap from the knee and rigid, pointed foot. Start these kicks without a hard target and aim nice and low. It takes a considerable amount of hip rotator and hamstring flexibility to perform this kick effectively with height and speed. A good way to condition your hip and leg muscles for this exercise is to....

1) Stand sideways about arms length away from a tree, put your palm on the tree..
2) Point the foot closest to the tree toward the tree.

3) Keep your hips, foot and knees all in line.

4) Lean toward the tree with your hand supporting you.

5) Lift the kiking leg with your knee bent, foot in clsoe to your butt. 6) Slowly extend the leg back and forth with a pointed toe.

7) Repeat for sets of 10 to 20. This exercise is really good for the sides of your glutes and your obliques.

Once you get to the point where you can do the kick well on paddles, the burn you get in your abs is CRAZY once you start incorporating it into your routine.
You CAN do it ;)

  • o - O

  • Where is the strenghen part?

  • piiiiiiiing, n'ahahaha (l)

  • ninjaaaaaaaaaaa is jaaackie chaaan

  • because he has flexibility... which he got through stretching.

  • ... the kicker is swinging upwards and striking the target on the upswing... you'll never get over the guard, even a dropped guard, this way and you will just end up kicking them in the elbow which will hurt you more than them... if you want to kick to the head you have to come up and then kick across/down. Also, I've done a lot of round kicks but I've never felt a burn in my abs.. maybe it has something to do with your technique.

  • Kick high - yes. Strengthening- ?

  • you bet your ass he is!
