because he has flexibility... which he got through stretching.

... the kicker is swinging upwards and striking the target on the upswing... you'll never get over the guard, even a dropped guard, this way and you will just end up kicking them in the elbow which will hurt you more than them... if you want to kick to the head you have to come up and then kick across/down. Also, I've done a lot of round kicks but I've never felt a burn in my abs.. maybe it has something to do with your technique.
