Named for the 19th century gunmaker Henry Deringer, the "derringer" name was used to describe the smallest usable gun ofa certain caliber. Originally a single-shot muzleloading firearm- the derringer evolved to be constructed with modern methods and materials and still carries the name. John Wilkes Booth used a philadelphia derringer in the assasination of Abraham Lincoln. Perhaps the most well known of these palm pistols other than the original "Philadelphia" is the Remmington Derringer which had two barrels and fired a .41 caliber rimfire cartridge. A cam allowed the hammer to alternate barrel striking.
The Remmington M95 over/under derringers were produced from 1866-1935 in several calibers and are still manufactured and sold today around the world by other companies in calibers from .22 LR to .45 LC.
This M1866 Remmington Double Barrel Derringer Replica is a .22 caliber blank firing model and is made in Italy by Kimar.
