@Audioquest56 I am sure build quality wasn't great in Kenosha but keep in mind, Americans were probably assembling the cars the same way as in France. The powertrain was also made in France.
The Renault 9 and 11 in Europe were pretty horrible as well for reliability.

The Alliance was actually a pretty nice car to drive. It was smooth, quiet and comfortable. But, it was really underpowered with the 1.4L engine. Build quality from the Kenosha, WI plant was poor and this led to a sketchy reliability record which had a huge effect on sales.

back in the renault had some ugly ass cars POINT BLANK!
-
well atleast nissan still makes cars like renaults

The car was an underpowered rattle trap with a goofy way of keeping the revs up when you shifted, making it look like you didn't know how to drive a stick. Still, kinda fun since you had to drive it like Michael Schumacher to keep up with traffic.

GM was never interested in AMC/Jeep/Renault, so pure conjecture (Chrysler only bought AMC because of Jeep, so that it could have its own off-the-shelf modern SUV with little product development). GM would have axed Renault too, since Renault had gained such a horrible name for itself in North America by 1986.
Renault cars are brilliantly executed in design, but why would GM keep round some French cars in its lineup? Renaults still are way behind many makes in the UK in terms of reliability.

If GM had bought AMC instead of Chrysler, then Renault would still makes cars in America rather than be killed off in favor of Dodge and Eagle cars.
-
Renault likely would have been killed by Ford anyhow. No other automakers at the time were really interested in the remnants of AMC other than Chrysler at the time anyhow.
I can't believe Chrysler killed off Renault in the US when they bought AMC, if only Ford had bought out AMC instead, then Renault would still be alive in the US today, what a shame.
