Odeon master xxBo 6959, rec. Berlin, August 1917.
Not much needs to be said about Ukrainian bass Alexander Kipnis (1891-1978), as he should be well-known enough internationally. He started his operatic career in Hamburg in 1916 and sang in all the major houses (including Bayreuth between 1927 and 1933) before the Nazis forced him out of the country. He joined the Met comparatively late in 1940 for six seasons and retired in 1946. He then taught at New York College of Music. He was famous for his solos in Mendelssohns "Elijah" and Verdis requiem and a famous Lieder singer. This was recorded during a very early session and is among the rarest of all his records.
Such an early thing ! Morvel.
