@yamflak silly putty flattens after you punch it, the d3o stays its shape when you punch it.

fluid dynamics... watch the mythbusters on non-newtonian fluids with the water/cornstarch mixture ("walking on water"). You can try hammering silly putty also. The silly putty will break like solid when struck instead of deforming when it is molded.
