a June hike out to see Balancing Rock, Tiverton, Long Island, Nova Scotia. 235 steps to descend, and then climb. The Rock is a lone piece of columnar basalt left standing when all the pieces around it fell away. Locals have actually tried to pull the rock over with fishing boats; purpose uncertain. In my opinion, the best time to view it is in the morning, when the sunlight is to the east; in the afternoon, the rock becomes silhouetted.

  • it's a bit of both at this point; the rest of the basalt has fallen away, leaving only this column which is connected to the pedestal, but at a certain angle, you can see light shining through where the column and pedestal meet, so it's not even a solid-through connection. locals have tried to pull it over with their boats, with no success (thankfully).
