Earl Bathurst on Past-Time Rails Mayflower on 26March 2005.Seen on the Wests formidable climbs at Whiteball,Dainton and Hemerdon with Tiverton Parkway and Highbridge thrown in for good measure.
5051 makes a tremendous sound as she digs in for the climbs. The climb of Hemerdon is just superb.

  • Thanks form your comments on my video.I meant it was a superb climb of Hemerdon from my videoing point of view. I am not a expert on steam locos,I just enjoy the sight of an engine working hard and putting on a show. Would there have been a banker or pilot in steam days so the locos would not be pushed so much?

  • A well-produced video - many thanks. Can't agree that the climb of Hemerdon was "superb" though. The maximum load is 9, which happened quite often, yet 5051 is making very heavy weather of 8. The driver may be holding her in a bit to keep the pressure up and avoid a stall but my impression is that the pressure is down (nothing showing at the safety valves) and the loco pretty well flat out. There is also too much smoke, particularly on Dainton, where it gets ridiculous.

  • the sights and sounds (barking) of a Castle working! thanks for the memory
