Polish Legions

Polish Legions (Polish Legiony Polskie) was the name of Polish armed forces created in August of 1914 in Galicia. Thanks to the efforts of KSSN and the Polish members of the Austrian parliament, the unit became an independent formation of the Austro-Hungarian Army. They were composed mostly of former members of various scouting organisations, including Drużyny Strzeleckie and Związek Strzelecki, as well as volunteers from all around the empire.

Józef Piłsudski in his order of 22 August declared formations of the Legions, but Austrian government officially agreed to it only on 27 August.

Initially the Polish Legions were composed of two legions: the Eastern and the Western, both formed on 27 August. After Russian victory in the Battle of Galicia Eastern Polish legion refused to fight against Russia and was disbanded on 21 September. THX to showed this part of the history! After the first World War Poland became independent again. I am happy for this, but i am sad because my home lost his 2/3 territory. Polish-Hungarian brotherhood 4ever!

My great-grandparents were from Galicia (Chocznia?). They were both in America by August of 1913, about a year before the First World War broke out.

indeed, i wished that it was Hun-Aus Empire not Auss-Hun ;), but even it was an empire of 2 nations, it had meany autonomies in its structures, includign the galician autonomy (polish one) and thats why the Polish Legions were created, the germans pressed poles to there army, devideing them into diferent units, so that those poles couldnt make an uprising.
