Located in the foothills of California's Sierra Nevada Mountains, this former gold-rush town now delivers a different kind of rush to mountain bikers. The town is surrounded by the Tahoe National Forest, whose rugged stream-laced terrain, isolation and picturesque views make it a perfect place for biking trails, with which the area abounds. There are pleasant wooded trails that recreational cyclists will love, and steep, rocky trails that provide technical challenges and probably a few bumps and bruises for even the most skilled downhill rider.
Best of all, the small town retains the charm and remoteness people look for in a getaway except when it hosts exciting races like the Downieville Classic 30-mile cross-country race or 14-mile downhill race. Then thousands of enthusiasts come to town to share the experience.
For non-cyclists there is outstanding fishing and hiking, including trails that provide vistas more than a mile in elevation.
