Whale carcass (probably an immature fin whale) encountered Aug. 6, 2007 while heading north during Fisheries and Oceans Canada groundfish trawl mission in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, off of the West coast of Newfoundland. Amazingly, when we returned south a few days later, we encountered the same carcass in the ship's path (at least I believe it was the same). Perhaps there is not much circulation in this 'dead zone' of the Gulf.

  • They often do, then as it decomposes, first the baleen, then the jawbones and skull baleen fall off while the body (pleated throat) fills with gas. This is what floats around, often for weeks. Its also why they usually float on the backs.
