On Friday 7th October a group of animal lovers came together at Ipswich greyhound racing track in Qld, to remember the thousands of greyhounds that are killed every year in Australia in the name of "sport".
These beautiful, gentle dogs that make wonderful family pets are slaves for the betting industry. Very few Aussies realise the ugly truth behind a bet at the races; thousands of greyhound puppies, slow greyhounds, injured and retired greyhounds are killed each year because they have no value when they don't win races. Many have a brutal death. The industry call them "wastage".
Australia also exports greyhounds to a number of countries including China and Korea. Nearly 1000 greyhounds have been shipped to China in the last 3 years, a country with no animal welfare laws and where skinning dogs alive is a common practice.
This candle light vigil is just the beginning of this movement to expose the dog killing industry of greyhound racing and to advocate for these gorgeous dogs who have been ignored for so long in this country.
The greyhound industry is the largest legalised puppy mill.

We intend to have a candle light vigil in every state in Australia in October from now.
Please join our movement.

What you can do:
Please don't bet on greyhound racing.
Write to your local MP and ask that your tax money not fund this industry.
Write to your local paper
Boycott companies that sponsor greyhound racing and tell them why.
Help greyhound rescue groups and other organisations that re-home greyhounds.
Consider adopting a greyhound - they really make wonderful pets.

  • Unfortunately the government will always support the racing industry (greyhound and horse) because of the amount of money they get back from the industry. Animals always come a sorry second in this country. I refuse to take part in it, even refuse to bet on the race that stops a nation as the poor horses also suffer the same fate as the greyhounds :'(

  • Great video and hopefully an inspiration for the Australian public to do something for these dogs that suffer all for the sake of money, greed and corruption only to be tossed aside and murdered by the very same industry. When will this stop in Australia, when? And when does the greyhound racing industry answer the questions? The silence is deafening!

  • As disturbing and sickening as this is to watch, I thank you for making and posting it. The world needs to wake up to the abuse and killings that THEY are unknowing participants of when they go to the tracks for a "'fun night of harmless gambling". Thank God Canada never condoned greyhound racing. I have a beautiful brindle that was rescued from a New Hampshire track 3 years ago. Keep up the fight! Someone has to speak for the voiceless!!! Bless you all who do this for the love of dogs.

  • Thank you to every person who made it to the vigil to stand up for these beautiful dogs. My dog and I are on the other side of the country, but we were with you in spirit. We have to keep fighting for these dogs, whose deaths go unreported by mainstream media.

  • Unbelievable that the terrible fete of thousands of poor Australian greyhounds (naturally gentle loving dogs) is still largely unknown and ignored! It is way overdue that their story be told and their silent voices be heard! NO MORE suffering in silence!
