NetworkNewsToday: 08 February 2011 -- UNTV: United Nations, New York - United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon briefed the press about the situation in Egypt following his meeting with the Security Council in New York today (8 February 2011); Ban, who had just briefed the Council on his recent trips to Switzerland, Ethiopia, the United Kingdom and Germany, called on all parties in Egypt "to avoid violence and to ensure freedom of expression and information."
When asked about the Egyptian Ambassador Maged A. Abdelaziz criticism about his earlier remarks calling for an immediate transition, Ban said that he had met in person with the Ambassador and they had clarified each other's positions.
Ban also talked about how Egypt plays an important role in the Middle East peace process noting that President Mubarak himself had been playing a key role in the negotiating process.
While he urged that Egyptian authorities and people to discuss their reform measures and transitions, Ban added that "the very strategic role which Egypt has been playing in the overall Middle East peace process should also be preserved."
Responding to what he meant when he called for bold steps to be taken by the Egyptian leadership, Ban said that the authorities had proposed many ideas, including constitutional amendment and there may be many areas where they can make changes.
He added "all this future of Egypt and process and case of this transition should be decided by the Egyptian leadership and the people, who are now calling for changes."
The protests in Egypt started just weeks after anti-government demonstrations led to the ouster of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in Tunisia earlier last month.
