i think, given the words, he himself is the 'grim reaper.' so in killing the deer, he is ultimately killing himself.

I think the man lost his youngest son in a accident. He lost his wife in a fire in a house. And his oldest son drowned. In every incident he saw a grim reaper or devil in the form of  deer, so he takes his anger out on the deer. When he finally realizes that killing the deer didn't change anything, he loses all hope and kills himself so he can be with his family again.
