Take a $2 line laser + cheap webcam + a little software and you have a 3D scanner ... measure time to objects and you have an affordable LIDAR!

or would U just wanna play FPS games with robots and lasers?

  • @vdoland You can do this with ROS, from ROS.org (open source). The learning curve is high, but you can save point clouds in a format that you can open with various 3d programs (blender for instance) and convert them to surfaces and solids, etc.

  • True, this is might be better for still scans, but kinect can be used to captured 3d objects in time, so this data can be used as bones to 3d characters animation, plus kinect can be used to scan environment, not only single objects. There is still a lot of work needed to be done before something good came out of it, but I'm sure potential is there.

  • Nice, what software you use care to share , a tutorial would be nice and you'd contribute to openkinect of your knowhow
