This was part of a modern dance composition final. This is an modernist ABSTRACTION of a research project on Chairman Mao's roll in defining the arts of wushu and opera in communist China, not a REPRESENTATION of wushu.

I wrote a research paper on the effects of the communist revolution on traditional Chinese arts, specifically wushu and opera. Then I choreographed this piece as a reflexion on what I learned.

This was not an attempt to make a "martial arts dance" It is a simple abstraction of the concept of changing tradition as seen through a stylized interpretation of a handful of few wushu movements.

The movement itself is mostly an abstraction of the animal styles, specifically tiger, monkey and snake respectively, with a few movements taken from the pi gua chuan and ba gua chuan styles. However, if you're a martial arts buff, don't dig to deeply because in the process of choreography, we bastardized the wushu forms beyond all recognition. I'm only trying to say that wushu was the basis for the movement.

The music is a piece from an opera I discussed in my project.

  • I don't remember the name of the song or which opera it's from, I'd have to dig through my CD collection to tell you.

  • this is not wushu

  • Is it ment to be like that or is it the worst butterfly kick ever ?

  • The music is good.

  • I kinda enjoyed it :) . thanks

  • Sounds like you were looking for a martial arts video. This is modern dance.

Also, you should probably read the section "about the video" before making unfounded remarks about what my intent as the choreographer was.

    Thanks for watching anyway.
