Reportedly, Holden preferred stark realism over a Hollywood-styled upbeat ending. Well he sure got what he wanted. Seeing the hero and his buddies perish under such desperate circumstances makes an enduring poignant impression that hasn't diminished over these some 50+ years.

I saw this when I was a teenager and years later found myself a infantryman with the 101st Airborne division Viet Nam and asking myself some of the same questions Lt. Brubaker did in what in the hell am I doing here and why me and in the end Brubaker realizes there is no rhyme or reason why but just fate.

I am currently looking for a copy of the movie but Michener's book makes the poignant point that there is the few who go further than the rest. He writes of it never being the right war and never being the right place but still the few have to fight despite all their fears and what ever they think is wrong with the war. One thing that never changes from the roman legions to this day-there is always someone who gets put at sharp end and rises above themselves in sacrifice.

This is a Great movie for me too. Wars realism comes through in all respects here. My Uncle actually flew this plane in the movie. He was a Navy pilot in Korea and a Captain in the Navy. My Cousin his oldest son has that helmet now. The movie is on DVD now too.

This is a great movie, I watch this whenever

it comes on. I wonder what William Holden would have done if he found out that Israel

was behind the attacks on 9/11? I bet he

We have this happening in Iraq and Afghanistan right now, sad but that's how war goes. However, people get killed like this isn't very pleasant to think about. I wish a time would come when we'd have no more wars but it's probably not possible. As long as we have humans, we'll probably have wars.
