As for the "sense of self" or ego, who is it who gains the realization which dissolves this sense of self? Thoughts appear and the thought that they appear to a witness appears. That these need to be "appearing to someone" is another thought appearing. Nothing need be said about egolessness or enlightenment when in reality nothing exists but egolessness.
That's as good a way as any other to dream to the dream. It is no worse to see one's way, path or perspective as superior to others...in spite of claiming to see all as equally divine. It may be more painful to see others as unenlightened but I see that the pain of iniquity, the path of assigning more value to some ways than others, is as divine as any other recognition or attainment. None will last as none exist in reality.
"screw it, everything is holy anyway, so cares what I do?" But a person connected with Being has no ego to feed with addiction. That is not to say that addiction is wrong, there is just no need for it. Being allows you to move on. As if things will continue to manifest until you fully acknowledge their existence. And once a pressing issue is accepted, the issue does not come up as often, and a space in the psyche is opened for new experiences, new challenges.
I agree, enlightenment is acceptance of what is, and a realization that all things are eqaully part of the universe, and therefore divine in their own right. However, realizing this on the level of mind is different from a living expression of that knowing through Being in the Now. It seems to me that Being is a silent observer of what arises, without needing to respond. When I first realized enlightenment, I almost gave up on it because I said,
The realization that all perpectives of the intellect that come will eventually be lost breaks the cycle of addiction...to an enlightenment that can be gained and WILL be lost...or to an enlightenment that requires certain behaviors, thoughts, feelings or powers but exludes others. All behaviors, thoughts, feelings and powers--all perspectives and insights gained will be lost. All forms are temporary.
The highest realization and the greatest nirvana is present at all times in the most murderous and terror filled plane of Naraka and during the greatest enslavement or addiction. Fear, greed and pain are as much an expression of enlightenment as any other thing. Higher, lower, better, worse, shallow, deep...these are all classifications of the intellect. What is presnt during and remains before and after the temporary forms of mind is the only "attainment" worth seeking or defending.
So I guess I take back what I said about habits being "permanently altered." A shift in awareness, insight & perspective may last a only a moment or only 10 incarnations. One not only could fall off the wagon the moment vigilence fails, but insight and perspective are bound to change even further...causing one to lose interest even in the self-control that once meant everything.
Note: In the phrase "permanently alter" permanently just means it lasts as long as th temporary shift in awareness or perspective lasts, be it 10 seconds or 10 lifetimes.
Yes, a shift in perspective often can permanently alter habits of desire, removing the interest and allowing one to see a thing for what it is and leave it at that. What I refer to is what is present in during what we would (in the current political climate) label unbalanced. To admit and realize that whatever is gained (including powers, insight and perspective)is lost as well leaves one "no longer interested" in an enlightenment which comes and goes.
it seems that when enlightened, there is no sense of self, no need to fill any void with "addiction", and so addiction seems to fade in to nothingness. It seems as though a connection with Being allows person to experience whatever emotions may arise, but there is no need to further manifest thought and emotional patterns through addictive thought or action. Enlightenment breaks the cycle.
