It was Thursday, December 1st, 1955. As every day after work, 42-year-old Rosa Parks boarded the public transport bus in downtown Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, to quietly get home after a tiring day. She paid her fare and took a seat in the rear section of the bus designated for black passengers. After a few bus stops the front section filled up with white citizens. In accordance to the established regulations the driver ordered black passengers to vacate their seats. Most, though unwillingly, obeyed the order and stood crowding near the rear bus door. Sitting by the window, Parks looked at the white man rushing her to stand up and calmly stated she would not give up her seat. When threats and insults proved useless the enraged driver called the police. Rosa Parks was arrested and put into the city jail. The following trial resulting from her decision and demonstrations attended by thousands became a milestone on the way to abolishing racial segregation in the USA. Years later, when asked about what had motivated her action Rosa Parks said "I was simply tired, tired of giving in all the time".
