The Soviet Union launched the world's first satellite exactly 50 years ago, usherin in a new era - a global space race. The Sputnik 1 pitted Cold War enemies in a head-to-head battle to be ahead of the game.
Caught up in that mission which heralded the space age was a radio telescope in the north of England, the only instrument to successfully track the satellite and its carrier rocket.
Now 94, the man who founded and operated the telescope, spoke to Al Jazeera about his role in the historic event.
derkzukenval, what are your credentials that allow you to be an authority on this subject?

technically, it did, it was the earths gravitational pull that left it in rotating status.. there is gravity in space genius..and the sputnik did leave the earths atmosphere or else it would have got dragged back in..dumbass.

Your the moron: Where do you think Earth is at?
Earth is in space.
What part of word satellite do you not understand?
Satellites were once 1005 "natural" until this event.
The reason the the satellites must be at 24,000 miles distance for geo-stationary orbit is that the earth is 24,000 miles in circumference.

All natural objects in space are satellites.
you tell me what the deal is: you have no problem stating that everyone else is deluding themselves when in fact it is you who are in delusion that you know the subject when in fact know nothing.
wow, just becasue you can hurl insults doesn't make you an expert but in fact confirms that your immaturity is not limited to intellect but to include emotions as well.

A satellite is a body that REVOLVES another other satellite.
Baseballs or planes revolve around the earth? Ignorant; study the meaning of words before you attempt to use them in language.

A moon is just a (natural) satellite. Stop being picky we know what the title meant

Sputnik was not a new moon, but a new satellite.
