How the test was conducted / How to upgrade your computer? Read more below...

WHAT IS THIS VIDEO?

Speed comparison between my old HDD and my new SSD drives on real applications, not with benchmarks.
HDD: Samsung 500GB 5400RPM SATA-300 2.5" (HM501II)
SSD: OCZ Vertex 2 240GB SATA-300 2.5" (OCZSSD3-2VTX240G)
System: Macbook Pro 13", 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 1067MHz

HOW WAS THIS TEST CONDUCTED?

Preview shows two screen capture videos that were run on the same system. The data from the HDD was cloned to the SSD and the computer was booted twice, with each hard drive. The old video contains comments on what is currently tested; the reviewed software is: iTunes, Safari, Microsoft Word, Photoshop. The video shows how much time it takes for each app to load on each drive. The SSD is much - much!! - faster.

The startup time of the system is:
HDD: 1 min 5 sec
SSD: 16 sec

The experiment is very precise. Before recording the video, each system was restarted 3 times in a row (you will not believe it, but the system restarts faster and faster each time).

HOW TO UPGRADE YOUR SYSTEM?

In order to upgrade your system, you only need to replace the the hard drive with a new ssd drive. Vertex 2 is, according to several reviews, the fastest SSD you can get in December 2010. After you buy the SSD, you can replace it yourself very very easy following this tutorial with images (link below). After that, reinstall the MacOSX from your installation DVD that came with your mac and choose "restore from Time Machine Backup" to restore all your files. (Advanced version: I chose to put the old HDD in a 2.5 SATA case and hook it up over USB. Then I installed macosx on a flash card over USB and booted from that. Then I copied the contents of the old HDD to the new SSD with CarbonCopyCloner. Whole upgrade took 1 hour and copying the data another 4 for 250GB of Data).

IMPORTANT:
1. Make sure you buy a Vertex II (2 - the second version) because there is also a Vertex I (1) which is less fast.
2. Make sure you buy a 2.5" SSD (which is for laptops) and not a 3.5" SSD (which is for desktops).

SSD Vertex II price points:
60 GB = $130,
120 GB = $230,
240 GB = $500,
480 GB = $1800.

  • This vid is a favorite on Abuja

  • I really dont think SSD are worth that kind of money though...i'd rather just wait for my programs to open...and I dont need my startup to be instant...i use enough technology as it is...does it really need to be ready at an instant? although when the prices drop I might have to get my paws on one haha

  • @ozbornio They sell kits. Brackets that you mount th e 2.5 in drive in to make it fit.

  • are you satisfied with ssd ocz???i am thinking to buy it.
