The fourth in the series of Maurice Ravel's "Histoires naturelles" (words by Jules Renard). With grateful thanks to Hans Groen for the kingfisher photography. Performed by Corinne Orde and Jonathan Cohen. Find our recordings of Fauré, Debussy and Vierne on www.roddard.com

Nothing took the bait this evening, but I took back a rare emotion. As I held out my rod with its taught line, a kingfisher came to land on it. We dont have a more striking bird! It seemed like a big blue flower at the end of a long stem. The rod bent under its weight. I dared not breathe, proud to have been taken for a tree by a kingfisher. And I was certain that it was not through fear that it took flight, but because it thought that it was merely passing from one branch to another.
