Businessman and CEO, Bob Duggan, delivers commencement address to the graduating class of 2009 for University of California Santa Barbara College of Letters & Science degrees in Mathematical, Life, and Physical Sciences 9:00 am ceremony on 7/13/2009.
Bob Duggan
Mr. Duggan was born and raised in California. He attended UC Santa Barbara for four years with the class of 1966, majoring in economics. Subsequently, he studied business management at UCLA through 1968.
Mr. Duggan is the founding principal of a securities investment and venture capital firm, Robert W. Duggan & Associates in Santa Barbara. He has participated as investor, adviser, or director of many small and large businesses with an emphasis on medical products, computer technologies, consumer retail goods, and outdoor media communication industries. Three of his many successful venture capital companies have become publicly traded securities; one was listed on the NYSE until it was bought out and another two were listed on NASDAQ. Two additional ventures have been sold to Fortune 500 companies.
Currently Mr. Duggan is the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Pharmacyclics, Inc. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of Pharmacyclics since September 2007. Prior to that, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Computer Motion, Inc., the pioneer of surgical robotics, from 1990 to 2003. While serving on the Board, he was named Chief Executive Officer in 1997. Computer Motion was acquired by Intuitive Surgical, Inc. in 2003 and since that time he has been a member of the Board of Directors of Intuitive Surgical, Inc., listed on the NASDAQ as ISRG.
Mr. Duggan is a recipient of the French Republic Legion of Honor awarded by former French President Jacques Chirac in June 2000. He received a United
States Congressman's Medal of Merit in 1985 from Texas Congressman and
former presidential candidate, Ron Paul, M.D. Mr. Duggan has served as a director of the Santa Barbara Symphony, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and the UC Santa Barbara College of Engineering Advisory Committee. He and his wife, Trish, have supported the College of Engineering, the UC Santa Barbara Athletics Program, and the world class Religious Studies Department. Mr. Duggan has been a trustee of the UC Santa Barbara Foundation since 1989. he Duggans are members of UCSB's Lancaster Society.
