Answer to your question:
Going from raster to vector isn't super easy and involves edge detection, which is simple with an alpha channel, however c4d isn't the most well rounded of applications. I would recommend putting the .png into Adobe Illustrator and using live trace to get a vector, then output into a format that c4d can read (I use 3ds max so I'm not sure what formats c4d can read, but svg should work)
best of luck!

@Slixys I already tried that. And it normally works. But with the images I have right now Cinema seems to be cutting up the vectors for some reason. when I import the file.

@HellionGoddess
You can always just set the .png as a reference image and manually trace it, that is if c4d has that functionality and the graphic isn't uber complex
There's probably a way to merge the vectors back together in c4d, I know how to do in in 3ds, but I guess it's kinda a more complex application, 3ds is very modeling oriented... meaning the animation tools are clunky compared to Maya

@Slixys Already thought of that. But doing that for 36 different symbols will be very tedious. But some symbols have alike shapes in them which I would rather not end up with odd shaped variations.
