I have a number of uncles and my own father who fought in WWII. I wish that I could know the Americana that they knew. This video should be played in High School & College history classes. Remind a much younger generation what American pride and heritage looks like. For that matter, it should be played in Washington.. Remind them. Denis Hurst did a wonderful job on this simple song. i'm forwarding it to everyone I know.

Denis - Thank you so much for the wonderful song about the North Platte Canteen! It is a cherished local story. Every now and then someone in town (Library, Newspaper, Mayor, Chamber or the CVB) will receive a letter of thanks from a veteran remembering their experience at the North Platte Canteen. Your song is a very special tribute.

Hi Denis! It's great to hear a new song from you. What a knack you have for painting musical pictures. Keep writing!

Been waiting a while for a new song from Denis.
What a great story about the kindness shown to the young men and women going off to war, maybe in many cases the last good thing to happen in their lives.
2011 is the 70th anniversary of the opening of the North Platte canteen.
Terrificly moving song. Deserves to be heard by a wide audience.
I say Great Job Denis! I The Canteen has a special spot in my heart and I can not tell the story without my voice breaking.I do no find an old man in Lincoln or surrounding Counties that does not remember his mother or his aunt or someone fixing lunches for the "boys".

Thanks so much. I'm from the UK, as you may know, and I only heard the story of the Canteen about 18 months ago. It really struck me as a wonderfully inspiring story of human kindness and of incredible dedication and organisation. You Nebraskans are well justified in being proud of the Canteen - I'm so glad you think my song does it justice.
Denis.

@churnetvalleyliner Yes, I am very proud of N Platte and the heritage we have. I just finished reading Bob Greene's book "Once Upon a Town" for the 2nd time. What a great story of dedication and perseverance! Our antique tractor club holds an event at the North Platte Museum every summer. Have you ever visited? They have a very nice display about the Canteen.

No, sorry to say I've never been to anywhere in the USA. Maybe one day?
