You can't watch this movie anymore (the Pentagon won't allow it), so you all should see Stanley Kubrick's "Paths of Glory" 1957. About how the french military, during WW1, executed five of their own soldiers, arbitrarily chosen from scores who fled a hopeless battle. Just to make an example of them, and cover up one general's costly mistake. Then explain how this execution was also justified. And how generals should get away with hiding their blunders. For the greater good, eh? Poppycock!

I can't judge him, because I don't know, how would I behave instead of him. Presumably I would try to miss the end of the war as well. Anyway, I'm supporter of death penalty, but NOT for fear, only for criminal homicides or other VERY serious offenses.

I can tell the ones who wont fight, they are always the ones who try to convince everyone that they will. He said I cant fight. If he turned up at the front and froze he would of got men killed. He said he would do anything else but he couldnt fight. I can respect the honesty of a man who knows he would be a liability. That boy was murdered to make a point

But you actually agreed with me on your last line "how do you make men fight who don't have it in them" Winning that war was no sure thing. The army was struggling with desertion, especially the 28th ID. I struggle with Esienhowers decision a bit too. In fact, I'm not really impressed with much of his leadership. But when looking at the overall situation, I think this was the best thing to do.
