Someone To Watch Over Me (Gershwin/Arr. Joe Turrin)
From "Oh, Kay"

This is a live performance of the Tartini Concerto in D and the Joe Turrin arrangement of the classic Gershwin "Someone To Watch Over Me," given at the 2005 University of Missouri Emerging Artists Showcase Concerto. It was another competition of sorts that I was asked to audition for as the GTA of the trumpet studio.

I apologize for the sound quality compared to most everything else I have posted. This was a concert that I never received the digital recording done by the university, so I had nothing to lay over the inferior video camera audio.

I didn't perform the Gershwin up to my lyrical standards. I don't do very well switching from small horn to big, evidently. But even so, it certainly is one of the best transcriptions I've ever heard for trumpet and piano. (And mom plays it SO well.) I fell in love with it the moment I heard Phil Smith perform it with Joe Turrin. And speaking of in love...every time I perform it, I always dedicate it to the love of my life, Jillian.

  • well done! your slurs are flawless, and your tone is awesome, what horn are you using?

  • Very kind of you to say. Thanks Matt.

    I'm playing a standard Bach Strad 25L ML 43 B-flat, and a Bach 1C MP.

To be honest, I have another video of performing this where I feel I play it better. The only thing is, the audio quality is quite inferior. If you want to check it out, the video is:

    Take care, Andrew

  • After hearing you play this song, I have hope that I might come near your performance. You are smooth.

  • Bravo!

  • Wow. You sound amazing. Is there a way I can get ahold of this music?
