Canada's laws are not too soft. In fact, they need a significant over haul. The US is a terrible example to follow seeing as they have incredibly high crime and incarceration rates; not to mention capital punishment has been shown to have an adverse effect (brutalization phenomenon). The reason she may have a shorter sentence in the end is because she is a youth, not because the laws are soft. If you would like to do some research so you can make an informed comment I can recommend books.
