LITTLE ROCK Governor Mike Beebe has confirmed Tom Kimbrell of Cabot as the new Commissioner of Education for the State of Arkansas. The Arkansas Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Kimbrell this morning. "Tom shares my philosophy that education is Arkansas's top priority and he knows that we can continue increasing student achievement through strong standards and rigorous curriculum," Beebe said. "He has also proven his ability to work with the diverse range of individuals and groups it takes to build an excellent education system." Kimbrell, 47, has spent 25 years in Arkansas education, beginning as a teacher and coach in the Paragould School District. He became superintendent of that district for eight years before taking the same position with North Little Rock schools. Since 2005, Kimbrell has served as executive director of the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators. A graduate of Corning High School, Kimbrell earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Arkansas before going on to receive both a master's degree and doctorate from Arkansas State University. He has also served on numerous education boards in Arkansas, including as co-chair of the New Facilities Standards Committee.
