René Medrano: Suicide Hummel's Last Supper at the Round Table

Inspired by the paradoxical nature of space that exists within a state of depression, Suicide Hummel's Last Supper at the Round Table, addresses the elements of inner and outer that correspond to a saturated melancholy. The performance, a certain symbiosis of contradictions, mirrors the spatial qualities of depression through which the exterior and the interior are at odds. This coupling of dichotomies is met in full synergy when addressing both the narrative and theme of the work which is simply growth and decay. Performed as a knighted hummel, the artist simply has a final supper of rose petals, flour, pills and enemas. His private ritual, seen publically, is an entertaining expression of a more macabre subject. Motivated by dark intentions and a signature cynicism the work transcends its very personal origin and hopes to inspire interpersonal thought through its burlesque guise.




BIO:
I learned the value of suffering in concurrence with my learning of superficiality. My work reflects this personal fundamental by always existing in a state of irony whereby a duality between a serious concept is coupled with a charming visuality. In some ways my art making is a decorative process in which I manipulate materials in an effort to render my concepts beautifully.
