As dusk descends upon Penang island and the azan maghrib call for Muslims prayer resonates across Georgetown, the Hindus from the temple across the road have their own worship with drums and chantings. Such is the peaceful and harmonious community living in the little island of Penang.

The stretch of road along Pitt Street, fondly referred as the Harmony Street, has Hindu temples, Muslim mosques, Chinese temples and Christian churches. Many of these buildings are now gazetted as part of the UNESCO world heritage site and these places of worship have been around for centuries.

Citizen journalist Chan Lilian joined the Hindus in celebrating the Navarathiri or nine nights at the Shree Maha Mariamman Kovil at Queen Street, Penang.
