About his voice; it is bad. In the studio, you have time to get that perfect take, and some real sleep. I'm sure Wayne Coyne on tour doesn't sleep very much. I don't know if he smokes, but it sure sounds like he does. With The Flaming Lips, the show and the experience mean more than the music, meaning, the music is there and is real, but the experience is what you take home with you. At a show, he uses the guitar as a prop. They are playing along to pre-recorded tracks. Listen closely.

pretty late reply, but thats becuase his guitar doesnt actualy work. it has a synth in the soundhole that works like a thermin and its bassicly just to be used as a prob and too look cool

eh, yeah, but...
I know bands that toured/tour more frequently than the Lips and whose vocals are FAR more demanding that are still bearable to listen to at the end of their tour, that's not really good excuse, it means he does not use proper nor healthy singing techniques, probably nor enough breath support.

When they tour it's a pretty relentless schedule & they give 100% at every show. The sheer emotion of Wayne's performances outshine his vocal prowess. When he smiles & pumps his fist you just want to smile & yell "YES!" & "WOO-HOO!". See them live. It's a trip... literally.
