The Oxford American held its first-ever Best of the South Awards Gala at the Capital Hotel in Little Rock on April 3, 2010.

Morgan Freeman received The Oxford American's Award for Outstanding Contributions to Southern Culture, and Charles Portis was honored with The Oxford American's Award for Lifetime Achievement in Southern Literature.

The event was hosted by Mary Steenburgen, and featured performances by Kris Allen, Ray McKinnon, Lisa Blount, Joey Lauren Adams, and Lawrence Hamilton.

Harry Thomason produced a special tribute film to Morgan Freeman for this event that was narrated by President Bill Clinton.
