The UK scrappage scheme annoyed me from the start, then I started to think about the implications of it; how scrapping, re-cycling, throwing away stuff for a little cash off a new car would cause a load more environmental damage than a new car could ever make up for.

Catalytic converters also create damage, they may reduce certain nasty chemicals but the side-effect is a different kind of environment abuse, basically, moving pullution to someone else's doorstep.

Tax on cars has also been re-worked by the UK government to encourage people into smaller cars, but how they have calculated it makes no sense what-so-ever

And finally the Toyota Prius, the car people buy because they think they are being 'green', when in actual fact they are making the problem a lot worse

Intersting quote from Wiki
• Although catalytic converters are effective at removing hydrocarbons and other harmful emissions, most of exhaust gas leaving the engine through a catalytic converter is carbon dioxide (CO2),[11] one of the greenhouse gases indicated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to be a "most likely" cause of global warming.[12] Additionally, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated catalytic converters are a significant and growing cause of global warming, due to their release of nitrous oxide (N2O), a greenhouse gas over 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide.[13]
• Catalytic converter production requires palladium and/or platinum; part of the world supply of these precious metals is produced near the Russian city of Norilsk, where the industry (among others) has caused Norilsk to be added to Time Magazine's list of most polluted places.[14]

An interesting article about catalytic converters

  • Very good five*****

  • Thanks faffy

  • Do you know what i think on this scrappage sheme is that if ie:someone scrapped their car and had £2000 off a new car, where do they think that they are going to get the extra £7000 or whatever it is to join this scheme when they can just about afford the old cars that already have.

answers on a post card please. Make that a stamp which is probaly the size of brain the person who thought up the idea has.

    Sorry about ranting on.

  • Good point Rob, how are they going to afford it?

My guess is finance, which means more debt and misery.

Anyway my friend, that is what this new channel is about - ranting, so rant as much as you like

    :)

  • Im a mechanic and i do MOTs, most of the cars that i do the emissions test on that are 10 years old ie R, S, T, V reg have CO content of 0.01%. the same as a new car so your point is very good its a waste and causes more pollution than it saves!! thank good its now come to an end. good vid!

  • my work truck is a ford f-250 with a 460 gasoline powered engine its so bad on gas that i honestly cannot afford to drive it other than for work and work only. It gets anywhere from 8 to 10 miles per gallon of gas depending on if its city driving or highway driving. The USA says theyre going to fix this with new hybrid vehicles and new low consumption gasoline engines in all our upcoming vehicles!!!! what the hell am i supposed to do , i cannot afford to buy a new car and gas is 2.89 a gallon
