On today's CapeCast: Can you help identify this mystery object? It was found buried in sand near Race Point Light in Provincetown about a month ago and remains a rusty enigma!
It is the base of a gaff crane. They were used to raise the gaff topsail as well as loading and unloading from dockside or platform. They were commonly used on boats and trains. Some were re-used with square hoists in various yards.
Could have been used for making the lighthouse, for ship to ship transfers at sea, for mining, for smelting equipment, but now...well it's just a hunk of junk!
OMG its a dishwasher! :O dont you saw the dishes too?

Guys -
Always love your work - but why is this so hard to make comments on these videos?
This relic is probably a wharf engine or something similar, used to tow vessels up a marine railway for maintenance.
If not that, possibly something of use for hauling shore nets.
Surely someone can do some real archaeological research and reverse engineering and bring this interesting mystery to a close.
Try the guys at the Mystic Seaport.
Have fun!
