Mark Green interview running for NYC Public Advocate. In 2001 Mark Green was a candidate for New York City Mayor against Mike Bloomberg. Mark Green's loss can probably be attributed to scant news coverage by the press of the 2001 campaign. The Mayoral election news coverage was eclipsed on September 11th, 2001 (911) by the attacks on New York City. Thanks to Mike Bloombergs ability to self-finance, he spent $74 million on his campaign, a record for a non-presidential election. The $74 Million gave Bloomberg the TV exposure, unavailable to Mark Green, and the election. "Mayoral hopeful Michael Bloomberg has increased his spending on TV and radio advertising to at least $2.5 million a week. The pre-Election Day ad blitz puts the Republican on a pace to burn through nearly $40 million of his own money by the time his campaign ends. His No candidate for any office has ever spent so much on commercials on a weekly basis in the New York market - not even Jon Corzine, who shelled out $60 million last year in winning a Senate seat from New Jersey. "(Daily News)
As we later found out Bloomberg spent $74 Million not the $40 million the Daily News projected.
But even with these monetary advantages out of the 1,520,443 total votes cast Bloomberg beat Green by only 35,489 votes which is only 2.4% which made the 2001 Mayoral election the closet one in history.
