Perhaps the reason the old version is my favourite, is just "the music". But, rightly or wrongly, I also get an impression of a difference in focus. In the old version, the impression is of a singer that loves the song, and that makes me love the song. In the new version, the impression is that the focus is on singing well. Put simply, I think the best way to make people love the song, is not by focusing on singing well, but by focusing on your own enjoyment and love for the song.

A fabulous song! I like both versions, they give different things. To me, the old version is more quiet and more slow than the new one. This is your traditional way of singing. The new version is perhaps sung in a more traditional way, meaning the way artists traditionally sing - with more volume, perhaps breathing less often. My favourite is the old version. More in my next comment.
