WHATS HAPPENING IN CANCUN MEXICO?

The San Francisco Chronicle Friday June 25

But increasingly, the violence is reaching popular tourist spots - safe zones that before seemed off-limits to the killers.

In the resort city of Cancun, authorities last week uncovered the remains of 12 people in nearby sinkholes, known as cenotes.

The hotel zone in Acapulco has been the scene of hours-long gun battles between military and assassins, who have used grenades in the fights. In Michaocan, where tourists flock to see the annual migration of monarch butterflies, cartel gunmen ambushed a convoy of federal police, killing 15 two weeks ago.

Taxco was supposed to be a safe haven. Built to mine silver, Taxco today is a hill town of red tile roofs, restaurants with sweeping views and shops selling silver jewelry to no one these days.

A few blocks from the central square, neighbors declined to speak much about an attack in which military forces, acting on a tip last week, killed 15 cartel gunmen at an apartment house on a quiet street. The street-level apartment, its windows shot out, still smells rank with blood.

  • @SheikhTaqiyyameister America needs to stop pretending it's completely a Mexico issue. Is it that easy to ignore the Billions of dollars and thousands of weapons pouring into Mexico from the US. I guess it is, so let's send troops and support to a country thousands of miles away. :)

  • Those party boats are the shit. Ending up in a sinkhole is not.

(P.S. The sand in Cancun is artificial. A huge investment.)

  • @lilyrose367 'They need to sort out this problem.'

The problem is Mexico's culture of corruption. Think of the things that the people of Lebanon went through to get Assad and Hezbollah out. But no. My little piece of venality is more important than my nation. Besides, it's all the gringo's fault.

  • 'WHATS HAPPENING IN CANCUN MEXICO?'

The cartels pay those police, too. They don't want tourism to completely stop, because they simply cannot afford to pay the entire country.

But it's becoming unsafe there, as well. That really sucks. That used to be a great place to party.

  • Kind of sad that the people supplying the drug cartels with the money for the product are the ones getting killed. Without those tourists there to party irresponsibly, they wouldn't have a source of income. That's like a farmer spraying his crops with wide spectrum herbicides.

  • In American cities you get mugged. In Mexican cities you get kidnapped and tortured.

  • @eltepatio89 Bullshit, Mexico is way more dangerous then the US, Mexicos murder rate is more then 4 times higher then the US murder rate and there are millions of Mexicans living in the US and one of the main reasons why so many Mexicans have immigrated to the US legally or illegally is to escape the crime and violence thats plaguing their country.

  • God Dammit! They're contaminating Cenotes with bodies????

That's the last thing I needed to hear from those Narcos...

  • Its a shame about these murders that have been happening, as it would put tourists off coming to Mexico. People get frightened when they hear things like that. Mexico needs tourism, its a beautiful country with fabulous people. They need to sort out this problem.

  • Not all Mexicans are drug runners or gang bangers; a few of them are bullfighters.
