GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) - City commission races, recalls and millages highlight the items on ballots throughout West Michigan on Tuesday.
In Grand Rapids, the First Ward race was the only race requiring an August primary. Incumbent Walt Gutowski won his seat with over 52% of the overall vote. Since he won the race by more than 50% of the vote, he will not have to run in November.
In the Kent county city commission races, East Grand Rapids (Ward 3) voters elected Brian Miller and Donald Markham and in Kentwood's First Ward, Robert Coughlin won that seat with 62% of the vote.
In Ottawa County, Coopersville elected Charlie VanderKolk, Larry Crandle, James Ward, Tim Palko, Dan Cooke and Bradley Sprague to the city council, while in Holland, voters chose Second Ward candidate Jay Peters to hold that seat and Wayne Klomparens and Scott Troeger to be the member-at-large.
Keeler Township in Van Buren County, voters there decided to recall their township supervisor and trustees Don Blackmond and Patrick Daly. The recalls against the township clerk and township treasurer did not pass. Also, Keeler Township voters agreed to the police and road millages, voting 'Yes' to them with 56% and 58% approval.
