A mic shootout that will help you get an idea of how a mic can affect the sound of the snare drum.
The u-87 was the only mic recorded trough a Trident s65 console preamp since the signal was to hot and distorted the ua2610 preamp even with the -10db pad in.

  • How do you isolate the snare so well? I use a 57 in almost the same position as you, and I get so much bleed from the hats. Any help would be nice!

  • @iiAcT well - agreat drum+ a great drummer

positioning is classic - high hat shouldnt be so low, and maybe should be weaker than what most people like ..this drummer hit the snare wit his stick reversed -- that helps a little too ..

  • hey, im a drummer and our band is gonna make a demo or ep soon and i need some mics, and you seem like a genius with this, so what would be a good pack of mics for not a whole lot of money and where could i get them.. i was on guitar centers site and saw some stuff, but im not sure if there are better sites with better stuff for less or what.. i dont really know anything about mics so any help from you or people reading would be great. Thanks

  • @masterdrummer19 many sets are good enough but need some help...... i like the equation - although the condesers are quite nasty. i would suggest you buy a set that seem nice and sound good - than record with it - and than add abetter mic for what ever sound worse, so slowly you can upgrade to a good collection . I.e if you take the Equations- buy 2 decent overheads like Rode Or MXL. by the way -MXL mics are cheap and the rock - so you can make a kit of your own...

  • What kind of snare drum is that? It sounds excellent

  • @honyontaco Ludwig Black Beauty ...

  • It's amazing how with the U87 the drum sound just opens up and breathes!

  • @deadbirdsings Yea its really resonant. Sorry about that comment. I was a little thick those many months ago. Maybe not my taste in snare but I hate to dampend snares. Have you tried double miking the top and phase shift the other to cancel out the ring. Works really well in my experiments.

  • @jakdedert - That's a valid point. On the bass drum mic shootout, I noticed he placed the Sennheiser on the outside of the drum, while the others were placed inside. I thought the Sennheiser sounded best, but I'm sure the other mics would've sounded quite a bit different and possibly better had they been put in the same position.

  • @faderfab - I wouldn't go so far as to say it sounded like crap, but I personally prefer a dampened thud to that hollow ring. It sounds like he has the skin stretched really tight. It's all a matter of taste, which is why drummers often bring their own snares.

  • I liked the Sennheiser MD-441 and the Neumann U87.

  • I love 441's on snares, wish more people used them/ had them.

  • You should do a snare botttom mic shootout :)

  • @kobifarhiMusic sweet man, thanks alot!
